FabrianoInAcquarello 2022 – This time in Bologna / 5 amazing days for watercolor people

I think we were all a bit skeptical when it turned out that the international watercolor conference meeting FabrianoInAcquarello could not take place in Fabriano itself this year. The main reasons for this were the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to a dramatic loss of accommodation capacities and tourist infrastructure, especially in small Italian towns. Unfortunately, it is still not certain whether the festival will ever be able to take place in Fabriano again, as it used to be, because no significant changes are in sight. For the first time, the festival, which expressly advocates peace, was overshadowed by Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as everything is currently overshadowed by man-made catastrophes and there is no sign of improvement.

So the main venue for FabrianoInAcquarello this year was the FICO-Eataly World in Bologna, an area on the outskirts that sees itself as a kind of amusement park on the subject of Italian food and drink, in which the production of a wide variety of products is demonstrated and then in one of the numerous restaurants there is tasted. In terms of atmosphere, the whole thing took a bit of getting used to, somewhere between a shopping mall and an amusement park, and of course it couldn’t stand up to direct comparison with the family atmosphere of the beautiful little town of Fabriano. And yet the organizers around curator Anna Massinissima have made a considerable effort to spread the spirit of Fabriano at the new venue – and I have to say, with great success.

After 2 years without this beloved and long-awaited annual meeting of watercolor painters from all over the world, the joy of seeing everyone involved outshone everything else anyway. For me it was the first visit to the festival as a country leader for Germany, and even though I already got to know the other country leaders virtually from various zoom meetings last year and during the preparation for this year’s event, I was very impressed there warmly welcomed and integrated into the „family“. And the program that Anna and her team set up and organized was very varied and great.

In addition to the exhibition of over 1,000 (!!!) watercolors from all over the world, according to the contributions judged by more than 80 respective country leaders, which almost showed something like an overdose of watercolor, there were numerous painting demonstrations, workshops and other activities by various artists from all over the world. I especially like the demos of Angelo Gorlini, …. And on the last day, in Fabriano, …. Emphasize, but of course all the demonstrations had their charm and offered something for almost every taste.

In the exhibition it was once again apparent that Germany certainly cannot (yet) play in the premier league when it comes to watercolours. I personally think you have to be realistic and acknowledge that the art of watercolor is much more recognized in many other countries around the world and in this respect the quality of the exhibited works by international artists is, overall, of a much higher level than ours Posts from Germany. Nonetheless, I am very proud of the contributions from our group, because on the one hand there were some new faces to apply and on the other hand we had some really great watercolors in the exhibition. In addition, Elke Memmler, who unfortunately could not be there, made her contribution to the design of the festival (posters, flyers, catalogues, etc.) available. Her original watercolor got a special place on the large demo stage in the conference hall and could be admired by everyone at close range. I myself was allowed to perform a demo together with Irene Gravender, which was a bit improvised, however, because there was no projection (I think they were simply forgotten in the hustle and bustle of the first day) and the audience because of the late demo in conference room arrived relatively late. Nevertheless, we had our fun and entertained the audience well.

Between all the activities, there was always plenty of time for talks and lively exchange, and you could stock up on various materials in the festival’s brands department, some directly from the manufacturers.

There were also some plein-air dates in the old town of Bologna, which were very popular. In this way, many of the visitors were able to absorb the special flair of the „City of Arkards“ at least for a few hours, because otherwise the venue and most of the hotels reserved for the festival were a bit far away.

Since I’m always looking for a more private retreat, I was lucky enough to live in a small hotel on the edge of the old town in an enchanting courtyard, with numerous cafe bars and restaurants right around the corner and only a stone’s throw from Bologna Central Station removed. If it was Bologna, I also wanted to soak up a bit of the special atmosphere of the city and used every free minute to do so.

The first four days of the conference were definitely worth the trip, but the best day of all for me (and many others) was Sunday, which finally took us to Fabriano.

FabrianoInAcquarello 2022 – Diesmal in Bologna
Ich glaube, wir waren alle etwas skeptisch, als sich herausstellte, dass das internationale Watercolor-Conference-Meeting FabrianoInAcquarello in diesem Jahr nicht in Fabriano selbst stattfinden kann. Gründe hierfür waren hauptsächlich die Folgen der Covid-19 Pandemie, die gerade in italienischen Kleinstädten zu einem dramatischen Verlust von Unterbringungs-Kapazitäten und der touristischen Infrastruktur geführt haben. Leider ist auch nach wie vor nicht sicher, ob das Festival, wie früher, jemals wieder in Fabriano stattfinden können wird, denn noch sind keine wesentlichen Änderungen in Sicht. Zum ersten Mal auch stand das Festival, das sich ausdrücklich für Frieden ausspricht, unter dem Schatten von Putins Angriffskrieg auf die Ukraine, wie wohl alles zurzeit von menschengemachten Katastrophen überschattet wird und eine Besserung nicht im Ansatz in Sicht ist.

Der Hauptveranstaltungsort für FabrianoInAcquarello war also in diesem Jahr das FICO-Eataly World in Bologna, ein in einem Außenbezirk gelegenes Areal, dass sich wohl als eine Art Vergnügungspark zum Thema italienisches Essen & Trinken versteht, in dem die Herstellung unterschiedlichster Produkte demonstriert und dann in einem der zahlreichen Restaurants dort verkostet wird. Von der Atmosphäre hatte das Ganze eine etwas gewöhnungs-bedürftige Atmosphäre zwischen Shopping-Mall und Freizeitpark und konnte natürlich im direkten Vergleich mit der familiären Atmosphäre des schönen Städtchens Fabriano in keiner Weise bestehen. Und doch haben sich die Organisatorin rund rum Kuratorin Anna Massinissa erhebliche Anstrengungen unternommen, um den Geist Fabrianos auch an dem neuen Veranstaltungsort zu versprühen – und wie ich sagen muss, mit großem Erfolg.

Nach 2 Jahren ohne dieses heißgeliebte und lang ersehnte jährliche Treffen der Aquarellmaler aus aller Welt überstrahlte die Wiedersehensfreude aller Beteiligten ohnehin alles andere. Für mich war es der erste Besuch des Festivals als Country-Leader für Deutschland, und auch wenn ich die anderen Country-Leader schon von diversen Zoom-Meetings im letzten Jahr und während der Vorbereitung für das diesjährige Event virtuell kennengelernt habe, wurde ich dort sehr herzlich willkommen geheißen und in die „Familie“ integriert. Und das Programm, das Anna und ihr Team auf die Beine gestellt und organisiert haben, war sehr vielseitig und toll.
Neben der Ausstellung von über 1.000(!!!) Aquarellen aus aller Welt, entsprechend der von den mehr als 80 jeweiligen Country-Leadern jurierten Beiträgen, die fast schon so etwas wie eine Überdosis Aquarell zeigte, gab es zahlreiche Malvorführungen, Workshops und andere Aktionen von diversen Künstlern aus aller Welt. Besonders möchte ich die Demos von Angelo Corlini, …. Und am letzten Tag, in Fabriano, …. Hervorheben, aber natürlich hatten alle Vorführungen ihren Reiz und boten für fast jeden Geschmack etwas.

In der Ausstellung fiel wieder einmal auf, dass Deutschland in Sachen Aquarell ganz sicher (noch) nicht in der Oberliga mitspielen kann. Da muss man, finde ich ganz persönlich, realistisch sein und anerkennen, dass die Kunst des Aquarells in vielen anderen Ländern der Welt wesentlich mehr Anerkennung erfährt und insofern auch die Qualität der ausgestellten Werke internationaler Künstler doch in der Gesamtheit ein wesentlich höheres Niveau zeigt als unsere Beiträge aus Deutschland. Dennoch bin ich sehr stolz auf die Beiträge unserer Gruppe, denn zum einen sind einige neue Gesichter dazugekommen, um sich zu bewerben, und zum anderen hatten wir durchaus einige tolle Aquarelle in der Ausstellung. Zudem hat Elke Memmler, die leider nicht vor Ort sein konnte, ihren Beitrag für das Design des Festivals (Plakate, Flyer, Kataloge etc.) zur Verfügung gestellt. Ihr Original-Aquarell bekam einen besonderen Platz auf der großen Demo Bühne im Konferenzsaal und konnte von allen aus nächster Nähe bewundert werden. Ich selbst durfte gemeinsam mit Irene Gravender eine Demo zum Besten geben, die allerdings noch etwas improvisiert war, weil es keine Projektion gab (ich glaube, die hatte man schlicht und ergreifend im Trubel des ersten Tages vergessen) und das Publikum wegen der verspäteten Demo im Konferenzsaal erst relativ spät eintrudelte. Trotzdem haben wir unseren Spaß gehabt und das Publikum gut unterhalten.
Zwischen all den Aktionen war aber auch immer viel Zeit für Gespräche und regen Austausch und man konnte sich in der Brands-Abteilung des Festivals mit diversen Materialien, teilweise direkt von den Herstellern eindecken.
Es wurden auch einige Plein-Air Termine in der Altstadt von Bologna angeboten, die großen Zulauf hatten. So konnten viele der Besucher das besondere Flair der „Stadt der Arkarden“ zumindest für einige Stunden aufsaugen, weil ansonsten der Veranstaltungsort und die meisten für das Festival reservierten Hotels etwas weit außerhalb lagen.

Da ich mir selbst immer einen etwas privateren Rückzugsort suche, hatte ich das große Glück, in einem kleinem Hotel am Rande der Altstadt in einem zauberhaften Innenhof zu wohnen, mit zahlreichen Cafe-Bars und Restaurants direkt um die Ecke und nur einen Katzensprung vom Hauptbahnhof Bologna entfernt. Wenn schon Bologna, wollte ich doch auch ein bisschen von der besonderen Atmosphäre der Stadt aufsaugen und habe jede freie Minute hierfür genutzt.
Die ersten vier Tage der Konferenz waren in jedem Fall schon eine Reise wert, aber der schönste Tag von allen war für mich (und viele andere) der Sonntag, der uns dann doch noch nach Fabriano führte.
