2021 – My Watercolor Year in Review

Hello, my dear watercolor friends! Here is my little review of the year 2021 with almost all the watercolors I have painted this year and the few highlights of the year. Well, I think there have been better years than the one just ended – but also worse ones.

The watercolor painting helped me to get over some of the low moods. I hope you were able to use your creativity in a similar way to increase your well-being.

In the first half of the year I got more and more into a depression and suddenly I didn’t feel for doing anything anymore. I didn’t even enjoy painting.

Fortunately, nowadays I am able to get professional help when it is necessary. But in addition to medical care, medication and a break from work, watercolor painting helped me to escape from the deep dark pit.

Because for some reason I suddenly got the idea to give flower watercolors a try. I don’t know what got me there?! Because actually I had always pushed painting flowers a long way away from me … Because on the one hand I thought it was something for older women and on the other hand I think flowers are so beautiful in themselves that I don’t have to paint them too. But suddenly the thought was there that I didn’t have to paint the flowers as they actually look, but could only use them as an initial spark and inspiration for more or less abstract experiments and use them to develop my own brushstroke.

The first flower watercolor was still a bit cramped, but after 2, 3, 4, 5 quick watercolors I suddenly knew exactly which direction I was going to take! And suddenly I was more motivated than I had been in a long time.

Of course, the tomato jungle on my balcony also inspired me. And this almost 4 square meters became my favorite place in spring and summer 2021. Unfortunately, the weather turned really bad towards late summer: continuous rain, little sun – very bad for tomatoes! But in the meantime I had so much fun painting again that I could cope with the measly tomato harvest.

I was particularly taken with sunflowers – and I even wrote a book and video workshop about it. All in all, the deep soul and the resulting floral brushwork was a blessing, because that really brought me further in painting and I have the feeling that it also has a positive effect on the other motifs that I paint.

I have of course remained loyal to my beloved old and dilapidated houses and probably not a week goes by without at least one painting.

It was very sad that the FabrianoInAcquarello 2021 festival could only take place virtually due to Covid-19. And that in my first year as a country leader and admin! Nevertheless, I have to say that there was a real sense of community even at the virtual meetings, zoom conferences and demonstrations on YouTube. Now we all hope that FabrianoInAcquarello can take place in 2022 and that Corona doesn’t thwart our plans again.

Nevertheless, the virtual edition of Fabriano was a highlight for me, because otherwise there were few opportunities for me in 2021 to exchange ideas with a few like-minded people. The most beautiful of the few was the ECWS Symposium in Ulm in September, this time hosted by the German Watercolor Society. In addition to seeing many nice and familiar faces again, I met many nice watercolor enthusiasts there. And I was allowed to do a painting demonstration in front of an audience and won a prize in the plein-air competition. Very nice! That was 4 wonderful days and they did a lot of good.

Before that, I was in Marburg with my loved one for a few days. A long time ago I was able to experience a wonderful and inspiring childhood there and I always like to go to the beautiful medieval town. Before that I had also dealt with Marburg in a few watercolors. Unfortunately, there weren’t very many workshops in 2021. One that I initiated privately has been postponed for a year and a half now. My first workshop at the Kunstfabrik Hannover was of course an absolute highlight and was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, most of the courses planned in Boesner branches were canceled – but the ones that took place were also a lot of fun.

I have also expanded my YouTube channel considerably. There are now a few dozen watercolor painting videos online, and the number is increasing every week. For me, the process of creating a watercolor is much more important than the end result. That is why it is important to me to capture the painting in motion.

2021 – Mein Aquarell-Jahr im Rückblick

Hallo, meine lieben Aquarellfreunde! Hier ist mein kleiner Jahresrückblick 2021, mit fast allen Aquarellen, die ich in diesem Jahr gemalt habe und den wenigen Highlights des Jahres. Tja, ich finde, es gab schon bessere Jahre als das soeben beendete – aber auch schlechtere.

Die Aquarellmalerei hat mir dabei geholfen, über so manches Stimmungstief hinweg zu kommen. Ich hoffe, Ihr konntet Eure Kreativität auch in ähnlicher Weise nutzen, um Euer Wohlbefinden zu steigern.

In der ersten Jahreshälfte habe ich mich zunehmend in eine Depression hineingesteigert und hatte plötzlich auf gar nichts mehr Lust. Noch nicht einmal das Malen hat mir noch Spaß gemacht.

Zum Glück bin ich heutzutage in der Lage, mir professionelle Hilfe zu holen, wenn es gar nicht mehr geht. Aber neben ärztlicher Betreuung, Medikamenten und einer Auszeit vom Job hat mir dann doch die Aquarellmalerei aus der tiefen, dunklen Grube geholfen.

Denn aus irgendeinem Grund kam ich plötzlich auf die Idee, es einmal mit Blumen-Aquarellen zu versuchen. Keine Ahnung, was mich da geritten hat?! Denn eigentlich hatte ich das Blumen-Malen zuvor immer ganz weit von mir weggeschoben… Weil ich zum einen dachte, das sei etwas für ältere Damen und zum anderen finde ich Blumen an sich so schön, dass ich sie nicht auch noch malen muss. Doch plötzlich war der Gedanke da, dass ich die Blumen ja nicht so malen müsste, wie sie tatsächlich aussehen, sondern sie nur als Initialzündung und Inspiration für mehr oder weniger abstrakte Versuche verwenden könnte und daran meinen eigenen Pinselduktus weiterentwickeln könnte.

Das erste Blumen-Aquarell war noch ein bisschen verkrampft, aber nach 2, 3, 4, 5 schnellen Aquarellen wusste ich plötzlich ganz genau, in welche Richtung es für mich gehen würde! Und auf einmal war ich so motiviert wie schon ganz lange nicht mehr.

Ein bisschen hat mich natürlich auch der Tomaten-Dschungel auf meinem Balkon inspiriert. Und diese knapp 4 qm sind im Frühjahr und Sommer 2021 mein Lieblingsplatz geworden. Leider ist das Wetter zum Spätsommer hin richtig mies geworden: Dauerregen, wenig Sonne – ganz schlecht für Tomaten! Aber inzwischen hatte ich wieder so viel Freude am Malen, das ich die mickrige Tomatenernte gut verkraften konnte.

Sonnenblumen haben es mir dann ganz besonders angetan – und ich habe sogar einen Workshop in Buch- und Video dazu verfasst. Insgesamt gesehen war das seelische Tief und die daraus resultierende Blumen-Pinselei ein Segen, denn das hat mich malerisch wirklich weiter gebracht und ich habe das Gefühl, dass es sich auch positiv auf die anderen Motive auswirkt, die ich male.

Meinen geliebten alten und verfallenen Häusern bin ich natürlich trotzdem treu geblieben und es vergeht wohl keine Woche, in der ich nicht wenigstens eines male.

Sehr traurig war, dass das Festival FabrianoInAcquarello 2021 wegen Covid-19 nur virtuell stattfinden konnte. Und das in meinem ersten Jahr als Countryleader und Admin! Trotzdem muss ich sagen, dass selbst bei den virtuellen Treffen, Zoomkonferenzen und Vorführungen auf Youtube ein echtes Gemeinschaftsgefühl aufkam. Jetzt hoffen wir alle, dass FabrianoInAcquarello 2022 stattfinden kann und uns Corona nicht wieder einen Strich durch die Rechnung macht.

Trotzdem war auch die virtuelle Ausgabe von Fabriano schon ein Highlight für mich, denn ansonsten gab es in 2021 für mich wenige Gelegenheiten, mich mal mit ein paar Gleichgesinnten auszutauschen. Die schönste von den wenigen war dann im September das ECWS Symposium in Ulm, diesmal ausgerichtet von der Deutschen Aquarell-Gesellschaft. Neben dem Wiedersehen mit vielen netten und bekannten Gesichtern habe ich dort viele nette Aquarellbegeisterte kennengelernt. Und ich durfte eine Mal-Vorführung vor Publikum machen und habe beim Plein-Air Wettbewerb einen Preis gewonnen. Sehr schön! Das waren 4 wunderbare Tage und die haben unheimlich gut getan.

Vorher war ich mit meiner Liebsten für ein paar Tage in Marburg, Ich habe dort vor langer Zeit eine wunderbare und inspirierende Kindheit erleben dürfen und fahre immer wieder gerne mal in das schöne mittelalterliche Städtchen. Zuvor hatte ich mich auch in einigen Aquarellen mit Marburg beschäftigt.

Workshops gab es in 2021 leider nicht sehr viele. Einer, den ich privat initiiert habe, wird jetzt schon seit eineinhalb Jahren immer wieder verschoben. Da war mein erster Workshop in der Kunstfabrik Hannover natürlich ein absolutes Highlight und hat enorm viel Spaß gemacht. Von den geplanten Kursen in Boesner Filialen sind die meisten leider ausgefallen – aber die, die stattgefunden haben, haben auch sehr viel Freude gemacht.

Die „freie“ Zeit habe ich stattdessen in meine Buchprojekte gesteckt, denn inzwischen ist es zu einer Leidenschaft geworden, Aquarell-Workshops auch in gedruckter Form als Buch oder auch als E-Book zu gestalten. Alleine in diesem Jahr habe ich 5 Publikationen herausgebracht und zum Ende des Jahres noch meinen „virtuellen Buchladen“ auf Amazon eröffnet.

Auch meinen Youtube Kanal habe ich erheblich ausgeweitet. Inzwischen sind schon einige Dutzende Videos zum Aquarellmalen online und es werden wöchentlich mehr. Für mich ist einfach der Entstehungs-Prozess eines Aquarells viel wichtiger als das Endergebnis. Deshalb ist es mir ein Anliegen, das Malen in der Bewegung festzuhalten.
