City Of Bridges – Watercolor

It is almost 30 years ago that I visited Pittsburgh and it was only a one-day stop-over during a railway trip to Chicago, but I really liked this view of the downtown at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers – seen from the hills at the South Shore. I wanted to paint that for a while already and now I finally did it. I used the 3D mode of Google Maps as a resource for the initial sketch, but the goal was more to find out, if I would be able to paint a complex motive like that in my loose and free watercolor-style. It is pretty easy to get lost in the tons of details of an aerial view image and so I decided to only mark the most important shapes of the city on the paper and then paint the scene in my usual direct watercolor way. Actually it worked out pretty good because I did not have too much respect for the motive and all the details but tried to remember the atmosphere and feelings I had when I was there.

Es ist schon fast 30 Jahre her, dass ich Pittsburgh besucht habe und es war eigentlich nur ein eintägiger Zwischenstopp auf einem Eisenbahn-Trip nach Chicago, aber ich mochte diesen Ausblick auf die Downtown am Zusammenfluss Allegheny, Monongahela und Ohio-River, wie man ihn von den Hügeln am Südufer aus hat. Ich wollte dieses Motiv schon länger malen – und jetzt habe ich es endlich getan. Ich habe den 3D Modus von Google Maps als Quelle für eine grobe Skizze benutzt, aber das eigentliche Ziel war, herauszufinden, ob ich ein derart komplexes Motiv in meinem eher lockeren und freien Aquarell-Stil würde umsetzen können. Es ist nämlich ziemlich leicht, sich in all den Details einer solchen Draufsicht zu verlieren. Deshalb habe ich nur die allerwichtigsten Formen des Motivs auf dem Papier skizziert, bevor ich in meiner üblichen direkten Aquarell-Malweise los gepinselt habe. Ich bin mit dem Resultat sogar ganz zufrieden, denn ich hatte nicht allzu viel Respekt vor dem Motiv und habe mich lieber an die Atmosphäre und die Gefühle meines Besuchs zu erinnern versucht, anstatt den Blick ständig zwischen Vorlage und Aquarellpapier hin und her schweifen zu lassen.
