Oil rigs, Signal Hill, Los Angeles, 1940

I continued my studies for a not yet very concret Noir project last week with these two full size studies. The idea that Los Angeles has once been the city of oil has fascinated me for a long time already. I heard about it for the first time in 1989 when I was doing research for my first graphic novel (and last published) that was a hommage to the Film Noir and Raymond Chandler. When I think back about this project I remember how difficult it was back then to find reference material about the 1940s in Los Angeles. I ordered two pretty expensive books about the 1940´s in LA from the United States, but in the end I could only use one or two photos from these  books as reference for my project ( I should say our project, because there was a writer involved, too). And today??? You just type in “Los Angeles 1940s” in Google and you find hundreds of good pictures from a great variety of sources and even film footage. One of the greatest things about the Internet. I don´t know where this NOIR idea will lead me to. Sometimes I think I´d rather like to illustrate one of Raymond Chandler´s novels or short stories, because I really love them – or I just create some pictures as a hommage. Whatever it will be – it will be a lot of preparation work – and I am not sure yet if I really like to get involved in a project so much, even if it is my own. We´ll see about that…

Ich habe letzte Woche noch ein wenig mit den Studien zu meinem, noch nicht sonderlich konkreten, Noir Projekt weitergemacht. Die Idee, dass Los Angeles einmal die Stadt des Öls war hat mich schon für lange Zeit fasziniert. Ich habe davon zum ersten Mal 1989 erfahren, als ich für meine erste (und letzte verlegte) Graphic-Novel, die eine Hommage an den Film-Noir und Raymond Chandler war, recherchiert habe. Wenn ich daran zurückdenke, erinnere ich mich, wie schwierig es damals war, brauchbares Referenzmaterial über die 1940er Jahre in Los Angeles zu finden. Ich weiß noch, dass ich damals mehrere sehr teure Bücher aus den USA bestellt habe, aber am Ende nur ein oder zwei Photos daraus als Referenzmaterial für mein Projekt gebrauchen konnte. (Ich sollte sagen für unser Projekt, denn es war damals auch noch ein Autor involviert. ) Und heute??? Man tippt einfach “Los Angeles 1940s”  bei Google ein und findet auf Anhieb hunderte von interessanten Fotos aus den unterschiedlichsten Quellen und sogar Film-Material. Eine der großartigsten Errungenschaften des Internets. Ich habe noch keinen blassen Schimmer, wo mich diese NOIR Idee hinführen wird. Manchmal denke ich, ich sollte mich an die Illustration einer der Novellen oder Kurzgeschichten von Raymond Chandler, weil ich sie wirklich liebe – oder vielleicht einfach nur ein paar freie Bilder als Hommage. Was auch immer daraus wir – es wäre eine Menge Vorarbeit nötig – und ich weiß momentan noch nicht, ob ich mich so sehr auf ein Projekt einlassen möchte, selbst wenn es mein eigenes ist. Wir werden sehen…
