Black & white experiment

From time to time I like to experiment with painting monochrome or black & white. I should do it much more often because it is such a good training for values and contrast – but on the other hand I love the bright colors so much. But the rainy weather during my vacation time was inspiring to do this painting of a fading beauty with Paynes-Grey only (and a bit of Chinese White). Most of it was painted wet in wet and I used a spray bottle all the time to keep the paints wet – first painting with a big flat brush and then adding details with the Chinese brush.

    1. Thanks so much, Holly. It is a pretty cheap paper – about 1$ / 1 € per full-sheet. It is hot pressed, with a light structure. I am still testing it and I use loads of water. I don´t care about puddles, I even try to work with them. I am testing the paper to the extreme – but so far it works pretty good. I guess it is available in Germany or Europe only.

    1. Thanks so much, Dwight! I love black & white. 30 years ago I illustrated a complete comicbook in black & white watercolors… it was a hommage to my favourite movie genre – the film noir. I was always thrilled by the look of those movies and their brilliant photography.
