Yes, I am impressed. Quite accidentally I found the announcement for an exhibition of painter Andreas Mattern in the town-hall of the city of Hilden (near Düsseldorf) and I decided to take the train and visit the opening before my nightshift. I have seen a lot of Andreas Mattern´s watercolors online before and often thought that I´d rather like to see his original artworks. It was worth the trip! Even if I feel more tired the following nightshift I still debauch in the impressions that these incredible artworks left in me. Even before when I looked at his works online I realized that Andreas Mattern does not seem to care too much about the rules for “classic” watercolors. It is the pure lust for shapes, colors and contrast that seems to drive him. When he feels for it he counters translucent glaze with well covering paints and spares to care about realistic depiction of shadow and light for the benefit of a free interpretation and transformation of the seen into shapes and colors. When you recognizing the depicted scene first when you look at his watercolors online the experience of exploring the original art is totally different. Viewed with some distance you recognize the scenery but when you come closer you dive into the graphic abstraction into shapes, lines, splashes. His characteristic style playing with bold lines, smooth layers of colors and interesting structures creates a breathtaking and joyful dynamic. The exhibition in Hilden shows a small selection of about 20 artworks – small selection, but oh my. Must see – most warmly recommended!
Ja, ich bin beindruckt. Durch Zufall hatte ich neulich eine Ankündigung einer Ausstellung des Malers Andreas Mattern im Bürgerhaus Hilden gesehen und mich kurzerhand entschlossen, mich vor meiner Nachtschicht in den Zug dorthin zu setzen. Ich habe schon viele von Andreas Matterns Aquarellen im Internet gesehen und hatte mir schon lange gewünscht, seine Arbeiten einmal im Original zu sehen. Es hat sich gelohnt! Und selbst wenn ich bei der darauf folgenden Nachtschicht noch etwas müder als sonst bin, schwelge ich noch in den Eindrücken, die die absolut sehenswerten Bilder bei mir hinterlassen haben. Schon vorher war mir aufgefallen, dass sich Andreas Mattern nicht um irgendwelche Konventionen und Regeln rund um das Medium Aquarell schert. Es ist die pure Lust an Form, Farben und Kontrasten, die ihn anzutreiben scheint. Wenn er Lust dazu hat, kontert er transparente Lasuren mit fast deckendem Farbauftrag und verzichtet auf realistische Darstellung von Licht und Schatten zu Gunsten einer freien Interpretation des Gesehenen aus Form und Farbe. Während man bei den Fotos seiner Bilder im Internet doch immer als erstes auf die dargestellte Szenerie schaut, lassen sich die Originale, die meistens das Format 76 x 56 cm haben, ganz anders erleben. Mit etwas Abstand betrachtet erkennt man auch hier zunächst das Motiv, doch je näher man sich herantraut, löst sich das Bild in fast abstrakte Formen und Linien auf, die von großer grafischer Ausstrahlung sind. Der Duktus und das Spiel mit Strukturen und sich überlagernden Farblasuren wird zum eigentlichen Element der lebendigen Arbeiten, bei denen das ursprüngliche Motiv fast zweitrangig erscheint. Gerade bei näherer Betrachtung versprühen Matterns Arbeiten eine derartige Dynamik, dass es eine wahre Freude ist. Die Ausstellung in Hilden zeigt eine kleine aber feine Auswahl von knapp 20 Werken, die einen guten Einblick in das Werk von Andreas Mattern verschaffen. Jedem, der sich für moderne Aquarellmalerei jenseits des klassischen Regelwerks interessiert, kann ich die kleine Ausstellung im Bürgerhaus Hilden wärmstens empfehlen.

While it is awesome to be able to see original work of some one else I find it hard to keep in mind that they got there in their own way and i must still find mine. i think it is important to steal ideas but just don’t let it blow you off your own course.

Why do you think it is hard to keep that in mind? My admiration for an artist always comes from exploring his / her individual and unique style and way of interpretation. It would not make much sense to try to paint like the admired artist because you would always know it is just a poor copy of somebody elses creative work. I admire and look at lot of art from artists around the world and this is always inspiring me to find my own and unique way.

I look at others art to see if i can figure better ways/approaches to express what i see. i am very frustrated that i can not paint what i see.

It should not frustrate us. It can motivate us to paint more what we feel than what we see.

I can’t wait to look Andreas Mattern up on the internet, if I ever get a chance to see his work in person, I will. Great conversation Carsten with Holly. I agree, paint what you feel, seeing is part of it of course, but ultimately for me, it is feeling and trying to convey that.

Unfortunately the pictures online don´t do justice to the original artworks. What I did describe in my little post can be explored in the original large watercolors only. He told me he does not care too much about the online pictures and compared with the real thing they look a little bit ´flat´.
