Last night was about bridges. I don´t have any practice with painting bridges but they have always been fascinating for me. I think the Brooklyn Bridge over the Hudson is the prototype of all bridges. And it is a challenge to paint, to create a feeling of the dimension without filling the sheet with a detail overload. It was hard to paint in the sketchbook, because the pages are too small ( 🙂 ) and the paper was not plain anymore because of multiple layers of intense colors. It would be good to come back to it soon… on a large sheet. The other sketch was without the bridge (inspired by the Sydney harbor bridge) first – but I got the feeling that there should be something in the background. Because the sketchbook paper is so different from watercolor paper it is possible to do that: to paint the background over the foreground layer. I really like the result.
Wonderful, evocative images.

brushstrokes, washes, colors, tones, and capturing the Atmosphere …… wow! so lovely Carsten I really enjoy how you have conveyed the bridges. and in my mind, the bridges reflect a metaphor. one place to another, making your paintings even more evocative. well done.

I will, especially on my harbor trip in May and June. A lot of bridges – old and new- there. 🙂

Thanks so much, Susanne! 🙂 I love painting in my sketchbooks. It took almost one year until I started using and appreciate high quality watercolor paper – but I always come back to painting in my sketchbooks.
