Dark side of the house

This morning I did feel for experimenting with some darker colors and a scene with an old mansion that is forgotten somewhere in a forest for a long time. I think I have always been impressed by the great and imaginative works of John Atkinson Grimshaw. In some of my early watercolor-sketches of abandoned houses I tried to adapt his use of color – which probably was not the best thing to start with when you learn to use watercolors. This morning while painting I let just my mood choose the colors not thinking about Grimshaw – but now, writing this post and looking at my watercolor I can see the influence pretty clearly. . I am really satisfied with the color-composition and the values of the finished watercolor – but the way it is painted is just awful (because I had no plan when I started the picture and you can see my uncertainty all over the picture and in any brushwork.) But this is why I call it an experiment. When I paint it the next time (and I am going to) I will know much better in which direction it should go and will benefit from this experiment.

Heute Morgen war mir danach, mit einigen dunkleren Farben und einer Szene mit einer alten, für lange Zeit in einem Wald zurückgelassenen Villa zu experimentieren. Ich glaube, ich war schon immer von den großartigen und phantasieanregenden Werken von John Atkinson Grimshaw beeindruckt. In einigen meiner frühen Aquarellskizzen von verlassenen Häusern habe ich manchmal versucht, seinen Einsatz von Farbe zu adaptieren – vermutlich nicht die beste Idee, wenn man anfängt, das Aquarellmalen zu lernen. Diesen Morgen ließ ich einfach meine Stimmung freien Lauf bei der Wahl der Farne, ohne an Grimshaw zu denken – aber jetzt, während ich diesen Post schreibe und dabei auf mein Aquarell schaue, kann ich den Einfluss schon ziemlich deutlich sehen. Ich bin ziemlich zufrieden mit der Farb-Komposition und den Tonwerten, aber gemalt ist das Bild ganz furchtbar (weil ich keinen Plan hatte, als ich anfing zu malen und man meine Unsicherheit deshalb überall im Bild sieht). Aber deshalb nenne ich es versöhnlich Experiment. Wenn ich das Motiv das nächste Mal angehe (und das werde ich), kenne ich die Richtung, in die es gehen soll, viel besser und das heutige Experiment wird mir von Nutzen sein.
